Five Questions You Should Be Asking Your Dermatologist

When you visit your dermatologist, he or she will ask you questions about your condition. This conversation should not be a one-way street because you are encouraged to ask them questions as well. Your dermatologist is an expert in skincare expert, and you should take the time you have with them during your appointment to gain more knowledge and insight. Here are five questions you should ask your dermatologist during your appointment:
1. What types of food should I avoid? Sugary foods or foods that are high in sodium can cause acne breakouts because they make you more prone to inflammation. If you suffer from autoimmune conditions that affect your skin like psoriasis, be sure to know what your food triggers are so you can avoid them. Dairy products, nuts, and shellfish are known to trigger skin allergies that cause eczema and other forms of rashes. Make sure you ask your doctor what foods you should avoid.
2. Are the ingredients in this skincare product safe for my skin? There are also certain substances found in skincare products that you should avoid, depending on your condition or your skin type. Ingredients like benzoyl peroxide are good for acne sufferers but not so much for those who only have one or two pimples as it can dry up your skin even further. The best thing to do before using a skincare product is to ask your dermatologist first if it’s safe for your skin and/or condition.
3. Are my moles and sun spots changing? This is one of the most important questions you should be asking your dermatologist. When you get a skin check done, your dermatologist will check all the visible moles and spots on your body and look for changes in appearance or any other abnormalities like bleeding or inflammation. This examination can determine if the mole is cancerous or precancerous.
4. How can I get rid of my scars? Having permanent scars is a thing of the past thanks to modern skincare treatments. Depending on how deep-rooted the scars are in your skin, it may be possible to reduce their appearance. There are many treatments your dermatologist can do to help them fade away and improve your skin, like microdermabrasion, skin peels, and laser treatments.
5. What can I do to look younger? Anti-aging treatments are quickly becoming popular. Your dermatologist can recommend a treatment to cater to your needs and skin condition. This may range from a combination of fillers and botox, to different types of facials, and even laser skin resurfacing. Dermatologists can also improve the youthful appearance of your skin by erasing wrinkles, fading away age spots and improving your complexion.
