Commemorating National Skin Cancer Awareness Month
May is National Skin Cancer Awareness month, so it’s important to break down the facts regarding this disease:
- This year there will be almost 200,000 NEW cases of melanoma diagnosed by dermatologists in 2022
- Fair skin, light hair, and light eyes are risk factors for skin cancer, while sun exposure is the most common risk factor
- The majority of skin cancers are either basal cell or squamous cell carcinomas
- Only 4% of all skin cancers are melanoma, which is the most serious and deadliest type of skin cancer
