Skincare Advice That Should Be Common

There’s the saying “out of sight, out of mind”, which means that if you can’t see it then you won’t think about it. That should not be the case for skin care, but it does happen. People do forget many things because they’re not often thought of, or too commonplace to be considered “important”. Here are three examples of skincare advice for things that are often forgotten:

  • Ears, Neck and Hands – It’s important to apply sunscreen every day, and even more important to make sure your body gets full coverage. It’s even more important that the sunscreen have an SPF rating of 30 or higher. Often the ears, neck and hands are forgotten, and can become very susceptible to sun damage. When applying sunscreen, make sure you remember to include these parts, and for extra protection on your neck and ears, to wear a wide-brimmed hat especially on sunny days. As a bonus, use retinol on the skin on your hands and your neck to keep it looking young.
  • Preventing scars – When you get cuts or scrapes, you sometimes just let the wound heal on its own if it’s superficial enough, right? Did you know that you can actually lessen the possibility of scarring by applying petroleum jelly on the affected area? If you keep the area moist, and protected with a bandage after cleaning, no scab will form and there’s a lower chance that a scar will appear. Clean the wound daily, apply petroleum jelly and replace the bandage until the wound has healed.
  • Sunburn Relief – When you know you’ll be out in the sun for a prolonged amount of time, make sure you REAPPLY your sunscreen every couple of hours. People often forget that sunscreen does not last the whole day and would need to be re-applied. When you do see the sunburned spots on your skin, you should apply over-the-counter hydrocortisone to help counteract the redness, and take medication like ibuprofen to help with your body’s anti-inflammatory response. Using a cool compress on the area and taking a cold shower instead of a warm shower will also speed up the healing process.
