Mistakes to Avoid When You Have Oily Skin
There are four main skin types: normal, dry, oily and combination. They are pretty much characterized by their names. People with oily skin tend to be a bit more prone to acne and pimples because of the excess oil being produced by their glands, making this type of skin a bit harder to manage. While the usual skincare rules and routines still apply regardless of the skin type, those with oily skin should avoid doing a few more things to keep their complexion looking nice and fresh. Here are three things:
- Touching your face too much – In general, this should be something you should be practicing. The average person touches their face more than 16 times per hour. Not only would the bacteria and germs from your hands get transferred to your face, but the reverse can be said as well. The excess oil on the skin for people with oily skin allows for more bacteria, pollutants and dirt to stick to the surface. Not only can you spread more germs back to your hands, but also across your entire face. This can result in acne breakouts and inflammation.
- Washing too much – Having oily skin is not an abnormal condition, it is one of the different kinds of skin types that people have. A lot of people with oily skin however tend to wash their face a lot more frequently in an effort to reduce the amount of oil. The oil found on your skin is naturally occurring and acts as a lubricant and as a protective barrier, so washing too much and stripping your skin off these oils can do more harm than good, like disrupting the pH level of the skin, or having skin that’s too dry to the point where wrinkles can easily form.
- Skimping on the moisturization – Just because you have oily skin doesn’t mean that you should skimp or avoid moisturizing entirely. It is true that your sebaceous glands do produce a lot more oil than usual, but to completely protect your skin, you still need to apply extra moisturizer. One caveat though is that you might want to use a water-based moisturizer instead of an oil-based one, as oil-based ones tend to feel a bit “heavy”.
