Clinical Specialization | Blood Vessels

Introduction

Also known as telangiectasia or spider veins, these are small, visible blood vessels that appear near the surface of the skin. They often look like thin red, blue, or purple lines or webs.

These blood vessels can be found on areas like the cheeks, nose, chin, or around the eyes. There is usually no pain or discomfort, but the appearance can be bothersome to some people.

Causes

Broken blood vessels on the face can be caused by factors like sun exposure, aging, genetics, rosacea, skin injury, and hormonal changes.

Other causes also include excessive consumption of alcohol, exposure to extreme temperatures, high blood pressure, smoking habits, certain medications, overuse of topical steroids, and pollution exposure.

Why You Should Get It Treated

Treating broken blood vessels can help because:

  1. Better Appearance: It can improve your skin’s look by reducing visible veins.
  2. Preventing Worsening: It may stop the problem from getting worse.
  3. Increased Confidence: Clearer skin can boost your self-esteem.
  4. Health Check: It can help identify any underlying skin or health issues.
  5. Healthier Skin: Some treatments can improve overall skin health.

How We Treat Broken Blood Vessels

  • Laser therapy: Lasers can target and treat broken blood vessels by applying heat to them, causing them to collapse and disappear.
  • Sclerotherapy: A solution is injected into the blood vessels to collapse them, though this is more commonly used for veins in the legs.
  • Topical treatments: Certain creams or ointments may help improve the appearance over time, but they won’t completely remove broken vessels.
