Are You Using Too Many Products?

Have you ever questioned the number of skincare products you’re currently using? Maybe even asked yourself if there is such a thing as using too many skincare products? The answer is yes, yes there is. Using too many products can actually do more harm than good to your skin and can be detrimental to the results you’re hoping for. Some people use multiple types of acids or mixing different beads for their exfoliation – and that can result in dryness, irritation and redness.

Combining products isn’t always a good thing, nor do they produce good results. There are many products that don’t mesh well, like vitamin C and retinol serums as this results in the loss of the retinol’s effectiveness. Emollient bases and sticky, non-absorptive substances also don’t blend well, resulting in a greasy and sticky skin surface.

Stick to products you know your skin will react positively to. If you’re thinking of using a new skincare product, run it by your dermatologist to make sure it won’t cause any allergic reactions or breakouts. Also, make sure you are applying your products in the correct manner and in the correct order. Your sunscreens should go first and then your serums, then your moisturizers. Allow for products to be absorbed and settle onto your skin before moving on to applying the next one.

When you go in for a consultation with a skincare professional, tell them which products you are using and how you are using them. They can tell you if you are using too much, or if you are not using them correctly. This will save you not only time, but also money.
