Overnight Products for Non-Normal Skin
Last week we discussed how those with not “normal” skin can properly and safely cleanse their skin without any problems. This week we come with you with part two, focusing on what those with non-normal skin can do for their overnight products.
- Sensitive Skin – Avoid products that may have fragrances or certain scents. Fragrances can be considered an irritant or an allergen for those with sensitive skin. There is an estimated 30 to 45% of allergic contact dermatitis cases to be caused by perfumes and fragrances. The tricky part is that fragrances are not from one particular set of chemicals, but a group of ingredients to make up the scent. Essential oils contain the same substances that fragrances are made from, so if you see products that contain essential oils, it’s best to avoid those as well.
- Dry Skin – Your focus should be to lock in moisture into your skin while you sleep. Thankfully, plenty of products that repair your skin overnight also provide long-term moisturization. Look for ingredients like ceramides, lactic acid and hyaluronic acid when shopping for nighttime routine products as those not only protect your skin’s moisture barrier but also reinforce it.
- Oily Skin – You might be tempted to try and use products that would dry out your skin, but please do avoid that, as your skin would more than likely overcompensate. When your skin, which already produces a lot of natural oil, detects that it’s dried out, it will up the production even more, leaving you with even oilier skin. Light overnight creams that also double up as a hydrating agent will do the job just fine.
- Combination Skin – Like with cleansing, balance is the key for overnight products. At night, you can decide to go for stronger products especially for moisturizers as some parts of your skin may dry out. Experimenting safely with both hyaluronic acids and lactic acids can provide you with some good results, but you need to give your skin some time to adjust to whatever dose you’re using. You can also consider treating your skin as sensitive when it comes to choosing products, going safe by avoiding potential irritants like fragrances and parabens.
