Why You Should Look Into Mineral Sunscreens
There are two types of sunscreens: chemical and mineral. Chemical sunscreens are the most common type and can be found on every grocery store, beauty shop, pharmacy, and online marketplace. Most of the time you just apply them and then go about your day. Mineral sunscreens are not often talked about because they have long been criticized for leaving a chalky white cast on your face and skin. However, modern mineral sunscreens are not the mineral sunscreens of the past, and can be just as effective, if not even more effective than their chemical counterparts. Here are three things you should consider when thinking about using mineral sunscreens:
- Effectiveness – Mineral sunscreens are immediately effective against the sun’s rays compared to chemical sunscreens, which take about 20 to 30 minutes before your skin starts to fully absorb them. This means that you won’t need to reapply as much, and you can go on with your activities out during the day without worrying if your sunscreen is already working or not.
- Better for certain types of skin – Chemical sunscreens end up being absorbed by your skin and can cause blockage of your pores, leading to acne breakouts. On the other hand, mineral sunscreens just “sit” on top of your skin and therefore has a lower tendency to cause any pimples. Mineral sunscreens are also a good option for those with sensitive skin because it has a much gentler formula.
- Safer Ingredients – There is a 2019 FDA proposal about the new regulations of ingredients found in sunscreens. After doing some research, the FDA deemed that out of the 16 currently marketed active ingredients found in chemical sunscreens, only TWO are considered safe. These are zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The other 12 that are commonly found in chemical sunscreens are still being tested and their safety being researched. Mineral sunscreens already contain those two. However it’s still a good idea to read the ingredient list to make sure that what you’re applying on your body is safe.
