What Causes Hairline Acne?

Having acne around your hairline can be a frustrating condition. It makes it hard to comb or shampoo your hair because you don’t want to accidentally touch and cause further damage to the pimples. It can be noticeable when your hairline becomes the victim of an acne breakout, as the pimples only appear along the edges of your hair. Here are four things that may be causing it:

  • Dirt and debris on your headwear – Hairbands, sweatbands, and hats can accumulate dirt around their brims and can contribute to having acne around your hairline. The headbands you might wear in the gym can contain bacteria, dirt and dead skin cells that can clog the pores on that area of your head. It’s a good idea to wash them regularly, and to rotate between different pieces of headwear to avoid the buildup.
  • Dirty Hair and Scalp – It may be caused by not washing your hair often enough. Keep in mind you should also shampoo your scalp when showering, not just your hair. It’s easy to skip your hairline when you’re under the shower applying your shampoo, so take a few seconds to make sure you get that area clean as well.
  • Folliculitis – This a condition where your hair follicles become inflamed. To avoid getting folliculitis, choose products that are sure to clean your scalp thoroughly. You don’t want bad bacteria, fungi or dirt to linger for too long around your pores as they can cause clogging, redness and ultimately acne breakouts.
  • Hair Products – A lot of hair products tend to use oils in their formulas, and these oils can end up damaging, inflaming or clogging your pores. Wash the product off your hair as soon as possible, meaning when you no longer need it applied. Sulfates  found in pomade, gels, and hair sprays can have the same effect too, so if you can, try to find products that contain the minimal amount of these or use the product sparingly.
