Back Acne – Causes and Prevention


Back acne can be a combination of whiteheads, blackheads, and inflamed or infected pores. Its causes can be varied and depend on many factors, just like regular acne. The most common factors include genetics, hormone balances, environmental triggers and also stress.
So how does back acne differ from facial acne? First is that the skin on your back is a lot thicker than your facial skin, so it can be more prone to clogging. The skin on your back also has larger pores. Larger pores meaning more active glands that produce oils. This can lead to larger and a worse acne condition known as “cystic acne”.
How can you prevent acne on your back?
1. Fabrics – Choose lighter clothing made from fabric that is more fresh, like cotton. When exercising, avoid tight clothing like spandex as it can easily irritate your skin.
2. Hygiene – Bathe or shower immediately after working out at the gym or just after sweating in general. This removes the excess oils and debris that have been built up on the pores of you back.
3. Avoiding Certain Products – If your skin is prone to acne breakouts, try to avoid oil-based body washes and lotions. Look for products that are labeled “non-comedogenic” as these products do not clog pores at all.
4. Exfoliating – Use a physical exfoliator or scrub to clean out your back. This will remove dead skin cells, grime and dirt that can clog your pores.
5. Use sunscreen – Anti-acne products can leave your skin more vulnerable to sunburn, so you need to protect it by using an SPF-30 or higher rated sunscreen when you are out during the day.
6. Visit your dermatologist – Regular check-ups with your dermatologist are also important in combating back acne, as he or she can examine your back and recommend any possible treatments if you do get back acne breakouts.
