Busting Even More Skincare Myths
Once again, there are many myths floating around relating to skin care. To truly learn how to take care of your skin, you need to know which things are actually true, rather than believing everything you read on the internet. Here are four skincare myths that have been proven false:
- Facial wrinkles appear naturally – This is true to an extent, but there are factors that contribute to how many and how early they appear on your skin. These include how much damage it has accrued over the years from the environment (especially from the sun), your habits and your lifestyle, and your genetics. Those who are always exposing their skin to the sun’s rays are more likely to form wrinkles a lot more prematurely than those who don’t. As far as habits are concerned, this includes how well you take care of your skin using products, while genetics involves how your skin naturally ages.
- SPF is not necessary in winter – SPF is needed EVERY DAY, year-round, regardless of the time of year. Sunscreen is easily the most essential skincare product everyone should at least be using. The sun’s harmful UV rays are present the entire year. Prolonged exposure to these rays (both UVA and UVB) can harm your skin, resulting in bad sunburns, to dark spots, and even skin cancers like melanoma.
- Those with oily skin don’t need to moisturize – Moisturizing products actually also hydrate your skin besides provide the moisture it needs to be able to function well. Many skin experts argue that hydration is even more important than moisturization, because dehydrated skin actually results in excessive oil production. Those with oily skin can SKIMP out on moisturization, but not completely skip it.
- Facial scars are there forever – Whether it’s from acne, cuts, spots or other causes, facial scars can be a bit unsightly. However, they may only be temporary. Many treatments available at your dermatologist’s office like microdermabrasion, facial peels, and a variety of laser treatments can help fade the appearance of scars, and even eliminate them permanently.
