EFFECTS OF JUNK FOOD ON YOUR SKIN
Ever wonder what a bag of chips, a chocolate bar, or a hamburger does to your skin?
Foods that are highly glycemic (meaning they are high in carbohydrates, and can raise blood sugar when eaten) are digested quickly by the body and can spike insulin. Spiked blood sugar levels increase the body’s inflammatory reactions, causing acne breakouts. Foods like donuts, chocolate and candies are high in carb content and are on the higher end of the glycemic index scale.
Vegetables, fruits and nuts are on the lower end of the scale and can regulate your insulin level when consumed instead of spiking it. They also contain antioxidants that help flush toxins out of your skin.
Greasy foods, like pizza and hamburgers don’t do skin damage from the inside but rather from the outside. When consumed, the skin comes in contact with the grease on these foods and causes pimples. A lot of these foods are also high in fat content and can influence hormones that trigger an inflammatory response in your skin, resulting in pimples.
As an alternative, eat green salads, nuts and lean meats (like fish) instead in small, multiple meals throughout the day. These are foods that are high in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, zinc and antioxidants that do your body more good than harm.
